Like
most UK Universities that contact us, Staffordshire University had
previously fallen victim to the escalating problem of equipment
theft from open access areas. Supported by the Staffordshire
Police Commander, the University evaluated several security options
before committing to the Tag & Trace iTrac system as a means of
the earliest possible warning of attempts to steal multi-media
projectors from their modern theatre facility. Protection and
tracking of IT equipment within the teaching blocks was a further
consideration and would be integral to the system.
Initial
priority was given to the 4 roof mounted projectors in the
quadrangle theatres, which despite being housed in security
enclosures had previously been stolen during daylight hours.

The Wavetrend active tag not only indicates its position to a
network of installed readers, preventing exit via unauthorised fire
exits, but also has motion detection alerts, which trigger
immediately the tag is moved more than its allowed amount. In
the case of projector protection, this was configured within the
software to generate an alarm on the slightest of movement, only allowing for normal day to day vibration within the theatres.
Remote
monitoring of the system from a client PC installed in the security
lodge allows real time coverage of all tagged equipment on campus
and gives the security guards second by second confirmation of asset
status.
Heading up the
Uni project, Service Administration Manager of Estates, Mr
Nigel Price comments,
"We
are proud to be proactive in the area of security and pleased with
the assurance the system has provided. Continued
'tagging'
will expand this coverage site wide."
